Her career in journalism began with Myrtle Beach South Carolina as an anchor and news reporter at WPDE-TV. In later years, she was employed by WCBD as anchor for the morning show and as a crime reporter. While in Charleston O'Dell's stories on the lenient police approach to DUI cases caused an State Law Enforcement Division investigation which resulted in the State authorities issuing the strictest guidelines regarding the situations. In the year 2000, Associated Press awarded Ms. O'Dell the Best Report of the year Award to the entire South Carolina media. O'Dell's work in Charleston was the reason she joined as co-anchor and investigative reporter as well as NBC's Miami WTVJ-TV. Before joining Access Hollywood she was a co-anchor on weekdays as well as the NBC weekend co-anchor. She also works as co-anchor for Dateline NBC and NBC News Today. She has covered major events like The Oscars, The Emmys, The Grammys, and The Golden Globe Awards. As well as co-hosting the Pre Show Arrivals to The Emmys & The Golden Globes. The host of The Miss America Pageant as well as the Miss USA Pageant and Miss Universe.
